Former Taliban leader flees for safety – Central & South Asia – Al Jazeera English

Zaeef was the face of Taliban being the Afghan ambassador to Pakistan in 2001. Following the US invasion of Afghanistan after 9/11 Zaeef was arrested and kept in Guantanamo Bay for four years. He has reportedly fled from Kabul after his home came under US-ISAF raids. He is said to be in UAE. Zaeef has also written a book about his time in Guantanamo Bay.

As the US-ISAF forces try to negotiate a deal with the Taliban leading up to their planned withdrawal in 2014 Zaeef’s name keeps coming up as an important representative of his reclusive regime.
