Media says between 5,000 to 20,000 dead and many more wounded. Unofficially the butcher of Syria is drunk from the blood of his citizens to the tune of 25,000 dead. He inherited a Presidential monarchy after his father’s (another butcher) death, therefore he has no obligation to his people. He sees Syrian protests as obstacles to his rightful ownership of his hereditary land. Saddam, Ghaddafi, Mubarak, Ben Ali, and Saleh ruled like that and Assad wants to follow the glorious tradition of his forefathers. So he kills and keeps on killing his own people mercilessly. Egypt has made it clear that there is nothing to stop the rise of the Brotherhood as the future state actor. Syria would be faced with similar a situation post Assad. Lebanon’s Hezbollah and other Islamist parties will be further emboldened to steer Lebanon away from secularism to Islamism.
The sheikhs of the peninsula have splendidly managed to uneducate an entire generation, turning them into the proverbial “camel jockeys” busy with nomadic traditions and debauchery. Liberating Syrians is not the real concern for Arab League.
Sheikhs fear the loss of another ruthless dictator brother because it might wake up their population to demand liberty from their royal highnesses. Gulf and al-Shaam based muslims could end up forming a new identity as liberated muslims of Arab world, above being Kuwaiti, Saudi, Emirati, Masri etc. Without a racial separation and artificial boundaries there will be no need for a sheikh or a sheikhdom. Arab sheikhs cared little for Muslims in Iraq, Palestine and Afghanistan, and nothing has changed in their attitude in the Syrian genocide. They are simply trying to secure their royal arses. Syria under a dictator is good for Israel because only a dictator can murder his compatriots to please his foreign supporters. This is what Israel wants the most from the Arab world. Keep Arabs divided, ruled by thugs and murderers turning Arab lands into police states. Israel is the last country on Earth to support democracy in the Arab world, let alone an Islamic state, in order to protect itself. If I were an Israeli diplomat I would be ringing the diplomatic circles in the UN and other platforms to raise support for continuation of Syrian dictatorship under the Butcher.
But if I were a Syrian, I would tell the supporters of tyrants what the Holy Quran says: And what is wrong with you that you fight not in the Cause of Allah, and for those weak, ill-treated and oppressed among men, women, and children, whose cry is:
“Our Lord! Rescue us from this town whose people are oppressors; and raise for us from You one who will protect, and raise for us from You one who will help.” (TMQ 4:75)
And incline not toward those who do wrong, lest the Fire should touch you, and you have no protectors other than Allah, nor you would then be helped. (TMQ 11:113)
