I heard a popular cleric give a “waz” on the “requirement to respect scholars”. The sermon commanded anyone who disrespected a scholar (alem, hujur, maulana, peer, etc- not clearly clarified by the cleric) will spend 40 years in hell for each “guna”. Scholars will be shielded, according to him, from the common people by a heavenly curtain on the day of judgement where God will quickly dispose of their cases in their favor. There were many more examples which I can’t remember right now.
brothers I just wanted to share the story of prophet Nuh (as). Nuh (as) pleaded his son to believe when the prophet was on the Ark and his son was drowning in the flood. Children normally accept the religion of their parents as their inherited faith. They say “oh we are muslims or something else because we were born in so and so family”. Prophet Nuh (as)’s son knew his father’s religion was Islam and also knew his father was an honest and truthful man. Yet belief did not enter his heart at all.
His disbelief was so stubborn he did not want to accept his father’s offer of help and get on the Ark while he knew death was so close to him. Being a prophet’s son did not save him in this duniya or in the akhirah.
It [the Ark] sailed with them through mountainous waves, and Nuh called out to his son, who had kept himself apart, “My son! Come on board with us. Do not stay with the disbelievers!” He said, “I will take refuge on a mountain; it will protect me from the flood.” He said, “There is no protector from Allah’s command today but He Who has mercy.” The waves surged in between them and he was among the drowned. (Surah Hud, 42-43)
Today, people take pride in their blood line. Scholar father, landlord grandfather, mujahideen forefathers, etc etc. There is the wealthy blood line of nawabzadas and shehzadas. The offsprings are not at all pious muslims but they want to demand people’s respect due to their family connection.
Its similar to corrupt politicians and civil servants. Common people consider them to be thieves so they have come up with innovative ways to extract respect. How? They put flags on their cars, police guards, VIP stickers, they make others call them Honorable, salutations from soldiers, stuff like that.
Disbelievers have no respect in this world or in the hereafter. Man will be judged according to his actions. The actions of his forefathers will be of no use to him. Scholars (whoever they are) will have a more difficult time than the common person in Akhirah.
There is no reason and no evidence to think that scholars have already received the “good news”. In fact, they should be asking what are they doing with the weight of the books on their shoulders. Real scholars should be directing the ummah in the way of the Nabi Kareem sallillahu alaihi wa sallam. Do we have such people in our society…
